I feel very fortunate to have found and to have been admitted to the Masters of Foreign Language Teaching (MAFLT) program offered by Michigan State University. Looking back at all my papers in the courses I have taken throughout the program, I realize that I have learned a lot about what foreign language teaching entails. I find all courses are extremely beneficial to my daily duties and provide me with a thorough explanation on teaching methods, evaluation, management, as well as many other aspects related to language teaching.

All courses in the program are interesting and useful to my work. However, one of my favorite courses in the program was Teaching Culture in Foreign Language. It helped me to better understand the rationale behind the importance of teaching culture to foreign language learners, an aspect that is often overlooked by language instructors in many teaching contexts. Culture has always been a fascinating subject for me in general, but it became even more fascinating when I needed to think about why and how to incorporate it into my lesson plan. I admire Dr. Temples for her in-depth knowledge and dedication to the field of language teaching. I was fortunate to have her as my professor for several courses throughout the program.

Another course I enjoyed very much was the Teaching Language with Technology course. I must admit that I am not a tech savvy person so I was a bit apprehensive at the beginning. However, throughout the course, with the thorough explanation and warm encouragement from Dr. De Felice, my professor, I was able to learn a lot from the course and became quite fluent in adopting new technologies in my class. Not only that, I am also pleased that I have been able to share with my colleagues what I learned from this course.

As an immigrant to the United States, I sometimes found it challenging to read and to fully understand academic materials in the program. Similarly, writing academic papers in English with APA citation was also a big challenge for me. I think I have made significant progress through the exposure to English in this program. As a result, not only did I gain a better understanding of the language teaching field, but also improved my English competence as a second language learner.

Working full time and having to take care of my young child, I feel so grateful that Michigan State University offers this MAFLT program online to busy individuals who want to pursue further education and broaden their knowledge. Now that I have completed the program, I will continue to apply what I have learned in my teaching practices and also review and revise our instructional materials in order to improve the quality of our language program.

I hope to be able to pursue a Doctorate’s Degree in Foreign Language Instruction in the near future.
